Sewing: fabulous Book and free Pattern

for a sweet Dutch and Belgian surprise, scroll straight down….

last weekend I got the chance to join an actual sewing workshop. aside from the incidental cushion cover for Floyd I didn't do an awful lot of sewing lately, so I was really excited to go. where did I go, you ask? well, on invitation by the beautiful Textielstad shop in Tilburg and publisher Tirion Creatief I went to a workshop that was build around the fabulous new sewing book Naaien & Stikken by Tessa Evelegh. this is a translation of the British Sewing Bee book which is based on this tv series, every Tuesday at 8.30pm Dutch time, BBC2. 

you can have a peek here and see a selection of the pages of this pretty book for yourself. don't you just love the style and photography? as apposed to other sewing books, there are so many projects I actually want to make. if you like polka dot fabrics, classic patterns with a modern twist, clear lay out and well written sewing patterns, whether you are a beginner or an experienced sewer, well, this is your book.

during the workshop about 15 ladies got the chance to make their own apron. a beginners version (the one I made) or the experienced version (shown top left in the picture below). both patterns can be found in the book. as you can imagine, we were one happy bunch of ladies, feeling so privileged to be there and get expert advice from the lovely people of Textielstad. among others, there were Marieke from the SewNatural webshop, my friend Maartje, Loes from the craft pattern site Freubelweb, Marieke from the VanMarieke webshop, Esther from the Happy in Red blog to name a few. so much fun to meet the ladies behind the blogs I've known for long, who by the way blogged lovely about this workshop too.

SCHORT

Dit mannenschort is heel gemakkelijk te maken en in een middagje klaar. Leuk om de man in je leven te verrassen met een zelfgemaakt cadeautje!

Benodigdheden

1 m middeldikke streepstof van 115 cm breed voor het schort en de zak

70 cm dunne denim van 115 cm breed voor de biezen

Twee metalen D-ringen, groot genoeg voor een 2,5 cm brede halslus

Bijpassend naaigaren

In de jaren zestig leerden de meisjes op de lagere school vaak naaien door een eenvoudig schort te maken. Het model was weliswaar mee stal wat vrouwelijker dan dit exemplaar, maar het principe van iets simpels en nutt igs maken geldt ook voor dit stijlvolle en praktische voorschoot. 

AFMETING SCHORT

Het mannenschort is 88 cm lang, van de rand van het bovenstuk tot de zoom. 

STOFKEUZE

Een voorschoot moet beschermen tegen spatten en vlekken, dus neem een stevige stof. De bies maak je van een dunnere stof.

Opties voor het schort:

katoenen zeildoek – denim – middeldikke canvas – gabardine – katoenen twill

Opties voor de bies:

chambray – dunne katoen

TECHNIEKEN

Blinde steek zie blz. 208 - Dubbele zoom zie blz. 210

Biezen maken en vaststikken zie blz. 230-231

Knippen

Pers de stof goed voor je gaat knippen.

UIT DE STREEPSTOF:

- Knip het schort eenmaal aan de vouw met de strepen verticaal.

- Knip voor de zak een lap van 30 x 27 cm met de strepen evenwijdig aan de langste zijde.

UIT DENIM:

- Knip stroken van 9 cm breed diagonaal uit de stof, genoeg voor een doorlopende bies van minstens 350 cm lang.

Werkwijze schort

1 ZAK GEREEDMAKEN

Vouw en speld langs de onderkant een inslag van 1 cm naar binnen (evenwijdig aan de strepen). Vouw ook langs de zijranden een inslag van 1 cm naar binnen. Om de hoeken netjes in verstek te vouwen sla je de hoeken open. Vouw de punt schuin naar binnen, over de aansluiting tussen de vouwen. Vouw de geperste zomen en de punt open en knip het uiterste puntje stof schuin af zoals op de tekening. Vouw de hoek weer terug en pers de vouwen. Rijg de zomen vast.

2 ZAK ZOMEN

Vouw langs de bovenkant van de zak twee maal een inslag van 2 cm voor een dubbele zoom. Speld en rijg de zoom. Stik de zoom vlak langs de eerste vouw vast. Haal de rijgdraden langs de bovenrand uit, maar laat ze langs de zijkanten en de onderrand zitt en. Pers de zak en leg hem weg.

3 SCHORTRANDEN ZOMEN

Vouw langs het bovenstuk twee maal een inslag van 1 cm. Stik de dubbele zoom vlak langs de eerste vouw vast. Stik op dezelfde manier een dubbele zoom langs de zijkanten en de onderrand van het schort. Vouw de hoeken onderaan in verstek. (Langs het armsgat zoom je de randen niet, want die werk je straks af met een bies.) Pers het schort.

4 ZAK OPSTIKKEN

Leg de zak met de goede kant boven tussen de merktekens op het schort. Rijg hem vast. Stik de zak vanaf de goede kant langs drie zijden door, 3 mm vanaf de rand. Haal de rijgdraden uit en pers de zak.

5 BIES GEREEDMAKEN

Stik de schuine stroken van 9 cm breed aan elkaar met diagonale naadjes van 1 cm, tot je een doorlopende strook hebt van minstens 350 cm lang. Vouw de strook in de lengte dubbel, de goede kant naar buiten, en pers hem. Vouw de strook weer open, vouw langs beide lange zijden 2 cm naar het midden en pers de vouw. Vouw de strook nu weer over het midden dubbel en pers hem opnieuw. Je hebt nu een gevouwen bies van 2,5 cm breed. Knip de strook in twee delen met rechte uiteinden, eentje van 187 cm lang en eentje van 142 cm lang. Vouw langs alle korte uiteinden een inslagje van 1 cm en speld het vast.

6 BIES VASTSTIKKEN

Leg het schort met de goede kant naar boven. De langste biesstrook komt langs het armsgat aan de rechterkant van het schort. Laat onder aan het armsgat een stuk van 85 cm hangen voor de tailleband en speld de bies glad langs het armsgat met het schort ertussen. Bovenaan houd je dan ongeveer 65 cm over voor de halslus. Speld de korte biesstrook op dezelfde manier langs de andere kant van het schort, ook weer met onderaan 85 cm voor de tailleband. Voor de halslus houd je bovenaan zo’n 20 cm over. Rijg de biesstroken langs de vouwen dicht en neem het schort mee waar de biezen langs het armsgat zijn gespeld. Stik de bies vanaf de goede kant door, 3 mm vanaf de rand, ook langs de taillestrikband, het armsgat, de halslus en de naar binnen gevouwen uiteinden. Haal de

rijgdraden uit en pers de bies.

7 D-RINGEN VASTNAAIEN

Schuif twee metalen D-ringen over het uiteinde van de langste helft van de halslus. Vouw 7 cm van het uiteinde naar binnen en naai de laatste 2 cm met blinde steekjes vast. Rijg de korte helft van de halslus door de D-ringen, zodat je de halslus korter of langer kunt maken.

Powder Coated

powder coated is what these coasters seem to me. especially with the little light we get from one window at the front of our house, it makes it so mysterious and calm. pretty too, I must add.

this was another quick finish project. well actually is was majorly delayed since I started a try out of these squares from Simply Haken months ago. they have been patiently waiting in a bin, forgotten and alone. until we accidentally broke one of our stone coasters. and since we tend to drink latte with water on the side, we were kind of fighting over the second coaster. I went upstairs to my craft room and found these two. 

the ends were woven in quickly and I decided on a simple, plain back colour for both with Catania cotton. the back squares are basically a regular square, with the last row made of clusters of 5 US triple crochet UK double treble crochet NL dubbele stokjes. attach them by adding a US UK slip stitch NL halve vaste in between the clusters of 5. in the corners I added 3 US UK chain stitches, NL losse, to give them a little extra touch. I tend to do that more often, apparently I like to mark corners when I crochet haha.

et voila, there you go. two extra coasters, and one WIP less. very quickly done, a win win situation, everybody happy. now that's the way I like it!

Last Week

while I am working on a new design for my PDF crochet patterns and try to picture as well as describe every crochet step as accurate as possible, I am a little absent here. sorry about that. I hope it will all be worth it in the end. 

how are you? is Spring peeking around the Winter corner where you are? here in The Netherlands she sure is and I am enjoying it. more light, a little warmer, singing birds everywhere… lovely.

on the crochet level, I have once again way too many projects on the go. sometimes I don't know what to crochet or I am not in the mood for it for weeks. other times I just can't seem to stop and my mind is racing to work on new ideas and patterns. oh well, never a dull moment haha. In the pictures, I am teasing you with the back of the pincushion I made, the yarn for a blanket crochet kit shipment, some squares I made a couple of months ago and yesterday they turned into coasters I will show you later. and there are still a few of my birthday flowers left, they have lasted over two weeks!

last but not least, on Saturday I was lucky to be able to join a sewing class organized by Textielstad and the Dutch publisher Tirion Creatief. the new book Naaien en Stikken came out, which is the translation of the English book The Great British Sewing Bee. it is packed with beautiful sewing patterns and on Saturday 15 excited ladies got to try out one of the patterns. more about that soon…

Spring Doily and a Little Pattern

it's been a while since I shared my doily love here on the blog, but no worries, it's still there. 

this doily is a pattern from the Simply Haken magazine, I showed it to you in this post. last week I finally managed to weave in the ends and block it.

so I guess this is a mini tadaa. I quite like the shape of the doily and for a change I have had it on my table since it was blocked. this is the first doily I made and actually use. I have my coffee or tea on it beside my computer and it makes me smile. it must be the Spring colours. the final edging in white was not in the pattern, so I wrote it out for you in the image above. I used scraps of regular Catania cotton together with hook size 3 mm, resulting in a rather large doily with a diameter of 23 cm, 9 inches.

Last Week

last week was the week of my birthday. we celebrated over the weekend with family, very nice to be able to do that again after 2 years in Canada. we served homemade soups, different cakes and pies and other treats. the weather was great, which resulted in Floyd being walked a lot, Spring is definitely in the air. a little early, but we enjoy it nonetheless. I blocked a doily I made months ago, later this week I'll show it to you in more detail. I started a new flower cushion project with my birthday yarn, and accidentally came up with a cute little pincushion for the heart pins. probably a pattern will follow later. 

and, this is the first time I am proudly showing you the new creJJtion logo. slowly but surely you'll see this logo appear on Instagram, here on the blog and in my pictures. for me it marks the beginning of a new phase for creJJtion. moving forward this year you'll see more changes and exciting happenings but I'll try to introduce them to you slowly, one at a time.

New Project

let's call it my birthday yarn. the Rowan pure wool DK selection I got on Monday. I am planning to make a cushion cover in Spring theme with popcorn flowers, for our couch. I made a couple before, you may remember them when you have a look here. the colours I choose this time are partly my all-time-favourite-go-to-colours; teal and blue. partly they totally match our interior colours; grey and dark gray, as well as peachy salmon. and then there's yellow, a colour that I am slowly starting to like especially in this golden hue. in real life it is not as orange as it appears on the pictures here. the yellow sure does bring a nice spark to the scheme. the idea was to make flower squares and join them with single crochet in yellow. but who knows what will happen on the way…

the pattern is based on the popcorn square pattern by Mille on her blog Mille Makes. I altered the flower here and there, and I am playing around with ideas for a smaller square shape. aaaah of course I started with teal, how I love this colour. the combination with peachy salmon is perfection to my eyes. calm and fresh, great for Spring.

Catching Up

Last week: preparations for Valentine's day with these hearts. 

I tremendously enjoy the beautiful ranunculus flowers these weeks. both in white as well as in those perfect powdery peach and pink tones, a wonderful gift from a dear friend who visited for my birthday, which was yesterday. I treated myself to a trip to a new-to-me wool shop and got some delicious Spring colours of Rowan wool. interesting how we seem to talk about yarn as if it were food, right? but really, I think they look delicious. more about those and a possible project in a new blog post tomorrow.

Crochet Hearts Tutorial

the heart garland is finished and very much to my liking I must add. thank you all for thinking along, suggesting good ideas and supporting me.

it was not the typical start-and-there-you-go project. it was more the this-might-not-work-out-at-all project. which makes me extra happy it did work out. 

I ended up combining three different types of yarn ~ Scheepjeswol soft fun, Einband and Léttlopi yarns, and two different techniques ~ crochet around wire and felting. the how-to details of each heart are written in the image below and the crochet pattern in both English and Nederlands for the felt hearts can be found at the bottom of this post. 

the hearts are joined with a needle and some thread, just 2 stitches per joint somewhere in the top half of the sides, I didn't count the stitches for this. just eye ball it and it will work out perfectly.

the felt hearts may seem a little long at first, however when you hang the garland they will be stretched. if they stretch too much to your liking, you can always add a little wire at the back. I alternated wire and felt hearts for more stability and it seems to work.

the wire hearts are done on a very thin and flexible iron wire. crochet single crochet or half double crochet stitches around the wire until the length is enough to make a heart shape. join the wire ends, shape into a heart (or something else of course) and weave in the ends.

pattern medium heart:

1 ~ chain 60, close with slip stitch in first chain. make sure the chain does not turn!

2 ~ chain 1, single crochet (replace single crochet with half double crochet in this pattern if you'd like a thicker texture) in the next 20 stitches

3 ~ 2 single crochet stitches in the next 3 stitches

4 ~ single crochet in the next 4 stitches 

5 ~ crochet the next 2 stitches together (insert hook in stitch, yarn over and pull through, insert hook in next stitches, yarn over and pull through, yarn over and pull through all loops on hook)

6 ~ skip 2 stitches

7 ~ chain next 2 stitches together. you have now created the centre of the heart. the pattern will repeat in reverse:

8 ~ single crochet in the next 4 stitches

9 ~ 2 single crochet stitches in the next 3 stitches  

10 ~ single crochet in the next 20 stitches, close with slip stitch in first single crochet. weave in ends, machine wash on 40 C on a short cycle. repeat cycle if you like it to felt more. note: don't wash the heart by itself in the machine, always add a towel or two. hold the heart in a little laundry bag like you use for bra's and stockings.

pattern large heart:

1 ~ chain 80, close with slip stitch in first chain. make sure the chain does not turn!
2 ~ chain 1, single crochet (replace single crochet with half double crochet in this pattern if you'd like a thicker texture) in the next 25 stitches
3 ~ 2 single crochet stitches in the next 4 stitches
4 ~ single crochet in the next 8 stitches
5 ~ crochet the next 2 stitches together (insert hook in stitch, yarn over and pull through, insert hook in next stitches, yarn over and pull through, yarn over and pull through all loops on hook)
6 ~ skip 2 stitches
